Straight stitches are worked diagonally, crossing over slightly on a central line to form a thin spine. Draw guidelines before beginning.
Step 1. Bring needle up at A and go down at B, slightly to left of center guideline. Come up at C.
Step 2. Go down at D, slightly to right of center guideline, crossing over stitch A-B and coming up at E.
Step 3. Go down at F, slightly to left of center guideline, and come up at G. Pull thread through.
Step 4. Go down at H, crossing over stitch E-F, and then come up at I. Pull thread through.
Step 5. Continue in this way, overlapping stitches close to central guideline, until column is complete.
